I probably might have not even considered or thought about dentistry if I, at least maybe not so quickly, if it wasn’t for my aunt. I had an aunt who was a dentist. She was my first dentist.
That kind of presented it to me very early on, but as I got older and started to wonder which direction I might go, there were several aspects that stood out to me. She had a direct impact on somebody’s quality of life. For dentists, you’ll hear many of us say it’s very gratifying to get someone out of pain, but building a smile is greater than that.
It has far-reaching, it has big ripples in someone’s life. It can just boost someone’s self-perception. It can impact everything from their social life to their professional life.
That gives them this sense of empowerment. It gives them just overall satisfaction that a lot of other parts of healthcare can’t quite do, can’t quite give someone sometimes. That’s very rewarding knowing that you have an immediate and direct channel into positively impacting someone’s life.
That was appealing to me. You can’t really do that with every facet of healthcare. I had parents who are pharmacists and they’re vital, they’re very important, but doctors get to see those patients and that’s just so much more personal.
