Custom mouthguards

Custom mouthguards starts with understanding your needs. Explore the information below, then talk with our team about your questions, your options, and what to expect.

Protection fitted to your needs

Sports and nighttime grinding place different demands on your teeth. City View Dental offers consultations for custom appliances based on your bite, activities and symptoms. A sports mouthguard and a night guard serve different purposes; the team can explain which approach fits your situation.

Athletic mouthguards

Contact sports, balls and equipment can expose your teeth to impact. A properly fitted athletic mouthguard cushions the teeth and can help reduce dental injury risk. Custom fitting aims to make the guard comfortable and stable enough for regular use. No guard can prevent every injury.

Night guards and jaw concerns

Teeth grinding can contribute to tooth wear or damage. Tell your dentist about grinding, jaw discomfort or changes you have noticed. After an assessment, the team may recommend a custom bite guard to help protect your teeth. Learn more about our TMJ and teeth-grinding care.

Sleep-apnea appliance consultations

The original practice site also describes oral appliances for sleep apnea. These are not interchangeable with sports or grinding guards. Suitability depends on a sleep-apnea evaluation and a coordinated treatment plan. See our sleep-apnea page to learn about this separate consultation.

Why fit matters

A custom appliance is made using measurements of your teeth rather than a generic shape. The team checks fit and explains how to wear and care for it. Let us know if an appliance becomes uncomfortable, damaged or no longer fits, so we can assess it.

Common questions

Why are mouthguards important?

Depending on their design, they help cushion teeth during sports or protect against wear from grinding. We will help distinguish those uses and discuss the type that is appropriate for you.

How are custom mouthguards made?

The practice takes measurements of your teeth to create a fitted appliance. The material and design are chosen for its intended use, and the fit is assessed before you begin wearing it.

How do I clean my mouthguard?

Follow the care instructions provided for your specific appliance. In general, rinse away debris, clean gently with a soft brush and an approved cleaning product, and let it dry before storage. Avoid hot water or direct heat, which can distort the material. Ask our team which products are suitable.

Prevent problems before they grow

Regular dental exams give us a chance to spot signs of wear and discuss protection early. Bring your current guard to your appointment if you have one, and tell us about the sports you play or the symptoms you experience.

Custom protection

Different guards serve different purposes

A dentist-made appliance is designed from a scan or impression of your teeth for a secure, comfortable fit. The design and material should match its purpose; an athletic mouthguard, a nightguard for grinding, and an oral appliance for sleep-related breathing are not interchangeable.

Athletic mouthguards

A custom sports guard cushions the teeth and jaw during contact, collision, and projectile sports. A close fit can make it easier to speak and breathe than a bulky one-size-fits-all guard, which can improve the likelihood that it is worn consistently.

Nightguards for grinding

Clenching and grinding can contribute to worn enamel, cracks, sore jaw muscles, or morning headaches. A custom nightguard places a protective barrier between the teeth. It protects against wear but does not cure every source of jaw pain, so an examination is important.

Cleaning and replacement

Rinse the appliance after use, clean it gently with a soft brush and mild soap as directed, let it dry, and store it in a ventilated case. Avoid hot water and direct heat, which can distort it. Bring it to dental visits so we can check the fit and replace it if it becomes worn, damaged, or too small for a growing athlete.
