Sleep apnea care

Sleep apnea care starts with understanding your needs. Explore the information below, then talk with our team about your questions, your options, and what to expect.

Sleep Apnea

Restful nights without the mask

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the tongue and soft tissue relax and block the airway during sleep. Breathing stops and restarts dozens of times an hour, which is why untreated apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and daytime exhaustion.

For patients who snore or have mild-to-moderate apnea — and for those who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine — we provide custom oral appliance therapy. The device looks like a sports mouthguard and gently holds the lower jaw forward so the airway stays open. We work with your physician or sleep specialist on diagnosis and follow-up.

Questions

Sleep Apnea FAQ

Do I need a sleep study first?

Yes. Sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis, so we work with your physician or a sleep specialist to confirm it before making an appliance. If you already have a diagnosis, bring your results to your consultation.

Is an oral appliance as effective as CPAP?

For mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea and for snoring, a well-fitted oral appliance is an accepted treatment and many patients wear it far more consistently than a CPAP. For severe apnea, CPAP usually remains the first choice, and we will tell you honestly which is right for you.

Will my medical insurance cover it?

Oral appliances for diagnosed sleep apnea are often billed to medical insurance rather than dental. Our team will help you understand your coverage before treatment.
