TMJ and teeth grinding care

TMJ and teeth grinding care starts with understanding your needs. Explore the information below, then talk with our team about your questions, your options, and what to expect.

TMJ & Teeth Grinding

End the morning headaches

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that lets your jaw open, close, and slide. When it is overloaded — most often by grinding or clenching at night — the result is jaw soreness, headaches, ear or neck discomfort, and teeth that wear down years early.

Our TMJ care starts with an evaluation of your bite, your joints, and the wear on your teeth. For most patients the first step is a custom-fitted night guard that cushions the teeth and guides the jaw into a relaxed position. Where needed, we adjust the bite or coordinate with a specialist.

Questions

TMJ & Teeth Grinding FAQ

How do I know if I grind my teeth at night?

Common signs are waking with a sore jaw or dull headache, flattened or chipped teeth, increased sensitivity, and a partner who hears grinding. We can usually confirm it from the wear on your teeth at an exam.

Will insurance cover a night guard?

Many dental plans cover occlusal guards when grinding is diagnosed. Our front desk will check your benefits and explain any cost before we start.

How long does it take to get a night guard?

We take a digital impression at your visit and the custom appliance is usually ready in about two weeks. We fit and adjust it in the office.
