A plan for your teeth and gums

Gum reshaping changes the outline of gum tissue to reveal more tooth surface when appropriate. Your dentist will evaluate your oral health and the reason for excess gum display before recommending treatment.

How treatment may work

City View's original treatment approach includes dental-laser contouring and local anesthetic for comfort. The amount of tissue involved and your individual needs determine the plan and recovery guidance.

Contouring may be considered alongside veneers, whitening, or clear aligners as part of a smile makeover. It is not a substitute for evaluating underlying dental concerns.

Common questions

What does treatment change?

For suitable cases, reshaping can reduce excess gum display, even out the gumline, or make teeth appear longer.

Will it hurt?

Discuss comfort options, including local anesthetic, with your dentist. Experiences and recovery vary; a pain-free result cannot be guaranteed.

How long is recovery?

Your dentist will give instructions for your procedure and explain the expected healing period and follow-up.

Gumline balance

What gum contouring can address

When the gums cover more of the teeth than desired, or the gumline appears uneven, conservative reshaping may reveal more natural tooth surface and create more balanced proportions. The first step is determining why the smile appears gummy, because tooth position, lip movement, jaw development, and gum tissue can each contribute.

Laser gum reshaping

For suitable patients, a dental laser can precisely remove and shape excess gum tissue. Local anesthetic is available for comfort, and laser treatment may reduce bleeding and eliminate the need for traditional incisions or stitches in many cases. Healing instructions depend on the amount and location of treatment.

Combining treatments

Gum contouring may be performed by itself or coordinated with veneers, whitening, bonding, or clear aligners. Planning the gumline first can be important when later restorations will be designed around the visible tooth proportions.

Is every gummy smile treated the same way?

No. Reshaping is appropriate only when it can be completed without compromising gum and bone health. Your dentist will examine the teeth and supporting tissues and explain whether contouring alone, another treatment, or no treatment is the safest choice.
